Mass Times: The Immaculate Conception Dec 08th

Published on December 7, 2021

December 08th is a Holy Day, the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Tuesday December 07th (Vigil) 7.00pm

It’s not an easy one to grasp. Many people think the Immaculate Conception is about Mary conceiving Jesus. But it’s not, it’s about the conception of Mary by her parents, Joachim and Anne. By a singular grace (given to no other person before or after) Mary was born without original sin.

Original sin itself is not easy to grasp either! C.S. Lewis puts it this way: “…we begin to notice besides our particular sinful act, our sinfulness; begin to be alarmed not only about what we do, but about what we are.”

Original sin is that internal space that we recognize as our propensity to sin, our propensity to be selfish etc. Mary was born without it and therefore kept free from all sin.
